Cameron

Cameron is part of the Ocean-Life themed series. It is inspired by the little shrimp that turn and suddenly swim in new directions. Shrimp live in oceans all over the world: near shores, in cold waters, in tropical waters and in the deep sea on the ocean bottom. The shrimp lives on the river beds and ocean floors around the world, filtering sand and particles in the water. Shrimp are known to stay in schools that contain numerous shrimp individuals, and are able to adapt easily to changes in water conditions. This paper sculpture is constructed only of hand cut, hand folded, archival color, inkjet paper modules and Ph neutral glue. There are approximately 3000 triangular double-pocket,double point modules of paper linked together. This is an ancient Chinese paper folding technique called "Zhe Zhi." The architecture of folded, linked and glued paper units creates a very strong and durable sculpture medium which permits direct paper sculpting. The science of topology dictates the slope and curve of the surface by the number of points linked in a circumference. Archival paper is acid free, color stable, and generally used as legal substrate for documentation and suitable to last a minimum of 100 years.

Ocean Garden

This "Ocean Garden" paper sculpture is composed of Anemone and is part of an Ocean Life theme on Contemporary Paper Sculptures by artist Francene Levinson http://www.francenelevinson.com It is constructed with archival inkjet paper,Ph neutral glue, recycled plastic supermarket bags, and hemp rope. The base is black acrylic. The sea anemone has a soft, muscular, cylinder-shaped stalk with a broad, circular foot at its base. Atop the stalk is a mouth surrounded by circular rows of hollow tentacles. The tentacles, which eject poisonous stinging threads to paralyze prey, grasp small animals and sweep them into the mouth. Usually, the sea anemone lives attached by its foot to shells, rocks, or wharf pilings. It can, however, slowly slide along the ocean floor on its foot or swim by moving its tentacles. When disturbed, the animal contracts its body, pulls its tentacles inside its mouth, and draws its mouth together like a pouch. This flower-like creature resembles the actual land anemone flower.

Raptor

This paper sculpture is on http://www.francenelevinson.com as part of a Bird-Life Series. Raptor was inspired by the Osprey, also known as the Kingfisher.Unique among North American raptors for its diet of live fish and ability to dive into water to catch them, Ospreys are common sights soaring over shorelines, patrolling waterways, and standing on their huge stick nests, white heads gleaming. These large, rangy hawks do well around humans and have rebounded in numbers following the ban on the pesticide DDT. Hunting Ospreys are a picture of concentration, diving with feet outstretched and yellow eyes sighting straight along their talons.

This contemporary modular direct paper sculpture is part of a plant-life themed series."Three Sentinels" was inspired by the Florida environment in which I live and from which I draw my sculptural themes. When my environment was threatened by the Gulf of Mexico oil catastrophe, my thoughts turned to an image of the last three blades of grass in the marsh. Urchin

Urchin is part of my "Ocean Life Series." It was inspired by the small spiny round creatures that live at the bottom of the sea.The sea urchin in found across the ocean floors worldwide, but rarely in the colder, polar regions. Sea urchins are commonly found along the rocky ocean floor in both shallow and deeper water and sea urchins are also commonly found inhabiting coral reefs. There are nearly 200 different species of recognised sea urchin, that come in all shapes and sizes. Some sea urchins are covered in long thin spikes where others have a hard shell that is made up of chalky plates. The red sea urchin is the longest living creature on earth, with some living more than 200 years. Sea urchins are omnivorous animals and therefore eat both plant and animal matter. The sea urchin mainly feeds on algae on the coral and rocks, along with decomposing matter such as dead fish, mussels, sponges ans barnacles.
